Special Initiavies In Solid Waste Management

Plastic Waste Segregation for Laying Roads

The average amount of garbage generated in Erode Corporation is 300 MT/day of which plastic waste contributes to about 9 MT/day. In order to handle plastic wastes in a better way, it was decided to segregate plastic wastes at source itself. So, ward 13, in Zone I, was chosen as model ward and separate bags were distributed to about 250 houses for segregation of plastic wastes, since 16.05.2013. Subsequently this has been extended to other Zones also.

The plastic carry bags and other plastic items so segregated is collected by the corporation sanitary workers every Monday and it is shredded in the shredding machine by self help group workers and Corporation workers who are trained to operate the shredding machines. The shredded plastic is reduced to below 2 mm. This is used for laying Bituminous roads. So far 3688.35 MT of waste plastics have been used in laying of 8.22 Km road in the city.

Vermiculture

Of the 300 MT of waste generated in Erode Corporation per day, biodegradable wastes contribute to about 180 MT. About 120 MT of general waste is handed over to IWMUST, a private operator. A plant for processing of waste by WINDROW’s method is functioning. The average amount of bio-waste collected from markets alone is about 10 MT/day. So, as an alternative to WINDROW’s method, a vermin culture plant was constructed and about 1 MT of bio-waste was processed on a trial basis.

Strom water drains

Strom water drain are vital in up keeping the road system and in ensuring that the users are not convinced due to stagnation or flooding of rain water. In our town roads are surfaced with bt and rain water stagnates in it. The Surface gets damaged or spoiled. Surface drains are used to carry both sullage as well as rain water from houses and streets. Hence we have constructed 192.36km drainage in our town area as open drains and also two numbers of under ground drains are functioning in an extent of 2.36km length and disposed in perumpallam odai.
